Meet Odilia: A Dedicated Coffee Producer
Odilia is an extraordinary coffee producer. At 68 years old, she and her husband have a deep connection to their land in Huancavelica, Peru. With just one hectare of coffee, she cultivates Caturra and Typica varieties at an impressive altitude of 2,300 meters, producing coffee known for its exceptional sweetness.
In 2021, Odilia faced a challenging time when her husband was diagnosed with cancer, and she developed a benign tumor in her hand. Fortunately, after two years of treatment in Lima, her husband is now cancer-free, and she has fully recovered. Today, they both continue to work on their farm.
Although their three children live and work in Lima, Odilia’s journey in coffee began in 2000 when she saw an opportunity to retire in her homeland. Before that, she spent years as a street vendor in Lima, selling juices and bread to provide her children with education and better opportunities.
With the introduction of Makeda, Odilia transitioned to producing specialty coffee, allowing her to sell at higher prices. She is now proud of her coffee’s potential and the improved income it brings.
Current Needs: To continue improving quality, Odilia requires measuring instruments such as temperature and humidity sensors, as well as grain moisture meters
Makeda Coffee Proyect
Huancavelica Peru - with Makeda
In Huancavelica, I collaborate with Makeda, a company dedicated to supporting local coffee producers. Makeda provides a strong support network, employing three agricultural professionals year-round to guide farmers through every stage of cultivation. They offer structured plans to improve coffee quality and purchase all the producers’ harvests.
Since 2021, Makeda has worked with nine producers, helping them increase their coffee quality from a cupping score of 81-86. The next goal is to enhance moisture control and introduce new coffee varieties.
Out of these nine producers, I work closely with the four i offer, who consistently deliver outstanding results.
Post harvest processing
It is selectevly harvested by her family and friends and de-pulped.
It is later washed, re-selected, and dried in raised beds.
It is shifted with #15 mesh and selected by hand.
There is a lot of work in the fields, from post-harvest techniques to water management.
